Dragons replace dinosaurs at Vector

Vector Arena has already been taken over by dinosaurs this year when Walking with Dinosaurs came to town, but 2012 will be the year of the dragon.
How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular is based on Cressida Cowell’s nine novel series, which was made into a feature film last year.
The show features 24 dragons including Red Death, the largest dragon and single largest animatronic creature ever made by the Creature Technology Company. Red Death looks set to make Vector Arena his own with a 20m long tail and a 12m long head and neck.

The How to Train Your Dragon movie, which brought in $500 million at the international box office, details the struggles of a Viking village plagued by dragons which steal their livestock and attack their homes.
The son of the village chieftain Hiccup shoots and injures a rare breed of dragon and, unable to kill it, decides to care for and raise it himself.
With a cast of 24 dragons, some with wingspans of up to 14 metres, viking warriors and villagers as well as circus and acrobatic performers, the production is one of the largest theatrical arena productions to ever go on tour.

The How To Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular combines fire-breathing action, epic adventure and laughs into a story based on the original book by Cressida Cowell.

It centres on Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn't fit in with his tribe's longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup's world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

And with dragons soaring overhead and a score featuring compositions from Icelandic singer-songwriter Jonsi from Sigur Ros and Oscar-nominated British film composer John Powell, the shows creators say audiences are set to be mesmerised.

"In our film, audiences around the world were transported to the mythical world of Vikings and Dragons ... and now, we are excited to immerse them in a one-of-a-kind live event in the How To Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, Chief Executive Officer of DreamWorks Animation.

The How To train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular will soar into Auckland's Vector Arena in April 2012.
