No bodies found after Christchurch blaze

The Fire Service says no bodies have been found at a central Christchurch apartment building gutted by a blaze.

The fire completely destroyed the building on Salisbury St last night.

There had been fears someone may have been trapped in the building, however the Fire Service said today this was not the case.

The fire was brought under control around 9pm last night, but police deemed the site too unsafe to search for a body during the night and resumed the search this morning.

Seven fire trucks were called in to battle the fire at its height

Meanwhile, firefighters were battling this morning to extinguish a shop fire in Palmerston North.
The abandoned two-storey house on Salisbury St was well ablaze when the Fire Service arrived at the scene about 7pm last night and it was thought a person was trapped in the building.

Police and fire crews searched the building this morning but so far had not found a body, as feared, Fire Service southern communications shift supervisor Andrew Norris told NZPA.

It took 28 firefighters and seven appliances to put the fire out.
